Frequently Asked Questions
Learn more about orofacial myofunctional therapy, what to expect, and how to get started with Essential-OMT.
Orofacial myofunctional therapy is a personalized, exercise-based approach that helps retrain the muscles of the mouth, face, and tongue. It focuses on improving functional patterns related to breathing, tongue posture, swallowing, oral habits, and overall oral function.
Myofunctional therapy may support people experiencing concerns such as snoring, tongue-tie restrictions, TMJ discomfort, teeth grinding or clenching, orthodontic relapse, tongue thrust, swallowing difficulties, unhealthy oral habits, and certain breathing or sleep-related concerns.
Treatment recommendations depend on each person's individual needs and evaluation.
Myofunctional therapy works on the muscles and habits that can influence airway collapse — the same patterns that may contribute to snoring, sleep apnea, and poor quality sleep.
By retraining tongue posture, breathing patterns, and the muscles that support the airway, therapy may help the airway stay more open, particularly during sleep.
Myofunctional therapy does not diagnose sleep disorders and is not a replacement for evaluation by a sleep physician.
Yes. Temporomandibular joint disorders can develop when the jaw and the muscles used to operate it are not working harmoniously.
This can be made worse by grinding and clenching, which also has to do with airway collapse. Those are the direct muscles we work with in myofunctional therapy.
Answering that takes a professional who is trained to assess tongue ties and other tethered oral tissues, such as lip and cheek ties, and to see how they are affecting your function and your symptoms.
This is not something that can be determined with a quick look. A full assessment needs to be considered before deciding whether a tongue tie release is necessary.
All age ranges can benefit from myofunctional therapy.
Sometimes that means a shorter or simpler program for a child who needs intervention now but isn’t quite ready to participate in a full program. That is where therapy gets tailored to each patient’s needs specifically.
No referral is required to contact Essential-OMT or request an initial consultation.

The process may begin with a complimentary 15-minute consultation if you'd like to discuss your concerns before setting up a comprehensive evaluation is appropriate.
At a comprehensive evaluation we assess areas such as breathing patterns, tongue posture and mobility, swallowing, oral habits, and facial muscle function. Heather can then recommend a personalized plan based on the findings.
Yes. Essential-OMT offers both telehealth and in-person appointments.
